Who am I? Character Creation Creating a LARP character can be a daunting and overwhelming task, especially for the beginner. I’d like to make that easier for you! Hopefully this article gives you an idea of how to portray your LARP character for their stay in Dawn Lands. Time to backstab those feels! You simply (ha!) need to design your character so that they fit in Dawn Lands: its settings, its lore, and the game system. It is important that you take the time to read about the playable cultures found in the Dawn Lands and start there! There are classic fantasy races like elves, dwarves, and fae - along with some you may not be familiar with. All the information concerning the culture that you pick will be on the website. As you look around, please keep in mind that some cultures have restrictions while others will have special abilities.

It’s time to spread out those blankets, open those picnic baskets brimming with tasty treats, and to gather with friends (new and old)! Battle at the Falls Picnic! Depending on what you plan to bring to share with others will determine how you’ll need to store and transfer the food. If you’re bringing a lot of food or beverages that need to be kept cold, then a cooler is necessary for food safety reasons. Unsure of what to bring? Think about what you might want to bring to the beach with you or out hiking to a favorite picnic location with friends or family. Remember that simplicity and portability are key! Also, keep in mind the heat - you’ll want to bring things that can handle the heat (even if in a cooler). Items to bring for the picnic: A way to transport your food and drinks…
NPC Or Ghost So, you’d like to attend a Dawn Lands LARP event, but not sure what to expect or maybe a bit shy or simply want to feel things out. There’s an easy answer for that! Come play as an NPC! Or if that’s too much for you, attend as what we like to call, a Ghost. But, wait! What's an NPC? A non-player character (NPC) is basically there to be a part of the story of the LARP, to fill various roles, and add to the environment for the players. An NPC could be: a monster, serving wench, tavern keeper, merchant, bartender, guard, farmer, pack of rats (not really, but that might be fun) and so on. Their job is to enhance the amusement and experience for players.
Most events need NPCs and those that give themselves up as tribute will receive some perks - they get in half…
My Character’s Appearance So, I’m not gonna lie. Finding the right concept for clothing, armor, and weapons for your character can be a very fun, yet overwhelming task. You gotta think about what you want your character to look like and what you want them to carry. It is very helpful to consider the setting, their backstory, practicality (this is super important), and your own comfort. These things will help you turn your costume into your character’s clothing - which is the ultimate goal. Don’t worry if you end up tinkering and modifying your clothing and equipment as you gain more experience - that’s completely acceptable and encouraged. Through questing, you’ll even acquire an item or two.
Before a debate starts, Imma come out and say it…it’s ok to buy OR create your own props and/or costume - if you’re able to make your own garments, it can help cut…
Just the Tip
In no particular order, listed below are some tips you may or may not find useful.
Please have fun and enjoy yourself! Players are attending the LARP to escape reality a bit - not to judge other players or newcomers. Don’t be afraid to make mistakes - they happen to seasoned LARPers too. The more you interact, the more others will interact with you. I feel like it’s easy to make friends at LARPs because I’m already around like-minded individuals and they’re there to have fun, like me! It’s ok to start small - be that your costume, character, weapons, or the event that you attend. Work with what you have and modify it. I would try to only purchase the essential items for a first event - unless you’re really sure about what you want and want to spend some money. If you start small with your character,…
