Aurelius Vance stands as the official face of the Alliance of Dawn Lords in Port Aethelgard. While he presents the image of a meticulous administrator dedicated to "Free Soil" principles, his history is a complex tapestry of conflicting loyalties. Though he is a Dawn Lander by birth and law, he is the son of a high-born Reman mother, and he often carries her silver signet ring—a quiet nod to a heritage of imperial authority that he feels the modern Alliance sometimes lacks.
His tenure at the port began with the highest of intentions, but the isolation of the island and the relentless pressure of his position led to a slow, methodical erosion of his ethics. Aurelius did not fall to a single moment of greed; rather, he was worn down by constant bribes from pirates who sought a blind eye at the docks and continued manipulation from the Tiss, specifically the Vell Trading Company. Thaddeus Vell, with a predatory patience, "assisted" Aurelius in balancing his early ledger discrepancies, effectively weaving a web of debt and legal blackmail around the Governor.
Now, as the month of Druidia brings the vibrant "Greenleaf" energy to the island’s flora, Aurelius finds himself a man trapped between two fires. He is haunted by the impending arrival of auditors from the Council of Lords and is desperately attempting to use the chaos of the arriving refugees to mask his financial crimes. He has grown increasingly paranoid, utilizing his authority to distract the local populace and arriving travelers from the growing discrepancies in his port records.
