Magic and Alchemy

Magic is an integral part of the Dawn Lands LARP. The world of the Dawn Lands is

A magical fairy in the Dawn Lands LARP.

one steeped in magic and wonder. We strive to make our magic system sensible, easy to discern, consistent with the story, and not slow play down any more than necessary.

The Four Schools of Magic

Arcane: This is magic that requires study into the theory and application of magic. Oftentimes taught by others or learned at magic schools and universities.

Nature: This is wild magic that stems from the power of nature. Some are born with control of nature magic, while others are taught.

Spirit: This is a strange and powerful school of magic that centers around the dead and undead. Good and evil have no place with this magic, since it can be used for either depending on the practitioner.

Divine: This is magic that comes from religion, faith, or ancestry. It is very powerful and oftentimes revolves around healing and protection.

Casting Spells

  • To cast a spell, the name of the spell and any necessary incantation must be called out loudly and clearly.

  • If the spell has a single target and does not require physical contact, use your hand or a single-handed weapon to point at the target.

  • If the spell requires physical contact, use your hand or a single-handed weapon to gently touch (not strike) the target.

  • If the spell uses a spell packet, the spell packet should be thrown with the minimum force required to make contact with the target. Do not throw a spell packet with excessive force.

  • Multiple spell packets cannot be thrown at the same time.

  • If the spell hits its target, then clearly call out the amount and type of damage (e.g. “two lightning!”).

*If you have trouble discerning color, please contact administration to discuss accessibility options.

Scrolls

A scroll allows a player to cast a spell in addition to their other class abilities. Basic scrolls can be used by anyone. Class-specific scrolls are restricted to certain classes and a few scrolls can be used by anyone of a certain level or higher. Many scrolls are based on one of the four schools of magic, which will be written on the scroll. A Player may only cast a non-basic spell associated with one of the schools of magic if they have the ability to do so.

Using a scroll is similar to casting a spell. Read aloud the scroll's incantation and announce the name of the scroll. If the scroll has a target, point to or gently touch the target as appropriate, or state the size of the area affected. Declare damage and magic type, if applicable. Then follow any other instructions given on the scroll. Some scrolls are used like a spell pack, in this case you can either wad the paper up like a ball or wrap the scroll around an existing spell pack. All of these details will be listed on the scroll. Each scroll can only be used one time ever.

Since scrolls are often hand-made and very beautiful, players frequently keep them as souvenirs even after they have been used. Please make sure to keep your used and unused scrolls separate so that you don't accidentally reuse a spent scroll. Alternatively, return your scrolls at the end of the game so that they can be used again.

Using Scrolls

When using a scroll the casting instructions, effect, duration, and other important information will be listed on the scroll but there are some basic rules that you will need to remember.  Some scrolls must be thrown at a target, most of these, but not all ignore armor. Those that involve things like mental manipulation or illusions can bypass shields. This is meant to reflect the role playing aspect of some sort of beam or bolt that engulfs the entire target. Please do not throw spells packs or scrolls hard and do not aim at the head or other vital areas.  If you throw a spell pack or scroll at a target but miss, then the scroll or spell pack is considered used and spent once it hits the ground. If it bounces off of an object or person and hits the target it does not count.

Creating Scrolls

The Dawn Lands LARP will sometimes have arts and crafts areas set up. At some events, players can use their artistic skills to copy scrolls onto paper. This is not a class or cultural ability but instead a fun activity that helps the Dawn Lands LARP to continue to offer scrolls in game.

No character can create a totally unique scroll with a new spell ability. Any scrolls that are drawn or written during scroll making have to be pre-existing scrolls (see the list below);

Scroll Levels of Availability

Some scrolls are harder to find, or make, than others.  The ones that are easier to find can usually be purchased fairly easily, the harder the scroll is to find or make the more rare it becomes. Legendary scrolls will very rarely be found and most often will be included as a reward for the completion of an epic quest.

  1. Ubiquities: Very common, easy to get and cheap.

  2. Common: Common and easy to get, but a little more expensive.

  3. Uncommon: Harder to get, but not impossible. Usually a player may only find one or two in shops at events.

  4. Rare: Hard to get and often expensive, usually only a handful released into the market during a year.

  5. Very Rare: Very expensive, very hard to find, and possibly only attainable after performing a special quest or task.

  6. Legendary: Perhaps only one or two will ever exist in the game. Ever.
