The Crow at the End of the Sea
The fires of Hammer Home had burned down to cold, gray ash, but within the chest of Thesus Ironhair, an unfamiliar flame refused to die.
He had torn through the undead vanguard with the savage jaws of his lycanthropic blood, standing shoulder-to-shoulder with the living until the Phantom Queen herself shattered the Lich Queen’s siege. That night, beneath the sweeping wings of the Great Crow, Thesus had bent his knee and sworn his soul to The Morrigan, rising not merely as a warrior of the North, but as her consecrated Paladin. Yet an oath sworn in blood requires a trial of iron.
Leaving the smoking ruins of Hammer Home behind, Thesus turned his boots toward the frozen north. He traveled without squires, banner-bearers, or companions, crossing the jagged foothills into the howling wastes of the tundra where the biting frost choked the life from all mortal things. When the land ended in sheer, ice-caked cliffs, he unmoored his oak-hulled longship and set its prow directly into the teeth of the Northern Sea.
Days blurred into weeks of relentless gray twilight. Ice formed in thick sheets along the gunwales, and the rigging stiffened like dead bone. Still, Thesus pulled the oars and trimmed the freezing sail, driven by a deep spiritual ache to push past the charted borders of Shiandria until the sea itself turned to slush and silence. Alone amidst the endless ice, his supplies frozen and his limbs turning numb under his mail, the harsh cold of the world finally exacted its toll. His vision faded to black, his pulse slowed to a faint rhythm, and as he slumped against the dragon-headed prow, death came to claim its due.
Then, the freezing gale ceased.
A shadow darker than the midnight sun fell across the deck, smelling of turned earth, cold river water, and ancient battlefields.
Thesus opened his frost-bitten eyes and looked up. Standing upon the icy prow was no

mere maiden, but The Morrigan in her terrifying battle form. Towering and majestic, her armor was fashioned from interlocking plates of midnight iron and crow feathers, her eyes burning with the piercing light of prophecy. Her dark cloak billowed against the still air, straddling the veil between the living sea and the Umbral Vale.
"You sailed to the edge of breath to find your purpose, wolf of the North," her voice echoed like the grinding of shields before a clash. "You did not seek life, nor did you flee the grave. You offered yourself to the ford."
With a single movement of her blooded hand, she drove a massive spear into the frosted planks of the deck. The dark ash-wood shaft thrummed with raw spiritual gravity, its leaf-shaped iron head etched with the sacred red-lined sigil of the Phantom Queen.
"Take the Spear of the Reaper," she commanded, her presence warming the freezing blood in his veins. "Where you strike down the corrupted and the foul, their stolen breath shall fuel your own vigor to stand in my name. You shall be my shield against the decay of Orcus and the unmade shadows."
Thesus reached out with calloused, trembling fingers and wrapped his hand around the haft. The moment his grip closed, divine restorative magic surged through his body, shattering the frost upon his armor, healing his wounds, and filling his lungs with life.
When he looked up, the goddess had dissolved into a swirling flock of ravens that took flight into the southern sky. A sudden, unnatural wind caught the longship’s sail, turning the vessel about and charting a safe, guided passage through the treacherous pack ice, carrying Thesus Ironhair back to his people to lead House Ulfheonar as the living vanguard of fate.
